John Lyman Smith

John Lyman Smith initially traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 with the Daniel Spencer/Perrigrine Sessions Company, according to his relative, Jesse Nathaniel’s journal.  He traveled with his wife, Augusta Bowen Cleveland.

Other members of his family in the same company were his parents, John Smith and Clarissa Loomis Lyman, his sister, Caroline Clara, with her husband, Thomas Callister, and his second wife and daughter, Helen Marr Clark and Helen Marr.

John’s brother, George Albert Smith, had traveled prior to the rest of the family with the Brigham Young Pioneer Company in 1847.  According to Jesse Nathaniel Smith’s journal, the rest of the Smith family met George Albert Smith traveling east with a group including Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, and Willard Richards.  They camped one day together and then parted ways and resumed their separate journeys.

In 1858, at the end of a mission, he traveled home with the John W. Berry Company, according to his autobiography and journals.

Then, in 1864, at the end of a four year mission to Europe, he traveled home with the William Hyde Company to the Salt Lake Valley, as indicated in the Deseret News on 26 October 1864.

Some biographical sources list his birth year as 1823, but that is incorrect.
