Charles Henry Wilcken

Wilcken, an immigrant from Prussia, enlisted in the U.S. Army when it was deployed to march to Utah Territory in 1857. Becoming disgusted with the troops, he deserted when his unit was camped near Ham's Fork. He was captured by Mormon scouts and was taken to Salt Lake Valley. He was treated so well that he decided to stay and was soon baptized. He changed his name from Carl Heinrich Wilcken to Charles Henry Wilcken. He was a trusted Church member the remainder of his life. His date of birth is confirmed by his death certificate.His wife and children arrived in Utah in 1860.
