William arrived in New York on 6 July 1866 via the ship Arkwright. Ship and PEF records indicate he was traveling alone. However, Thompson company records show he purchased 2 1/2 adult food rations for the overland journey. It is not certain who he was supporting during that part of the journey. Company records also indicate that he left the company at O'Fallon's Bluff. It is not certain if he continued on to Utah or turned back at that point.
He should not be confused with the William Kettle who traveled with his sisters as part of the 1866 Andrew Scott Company.
