Jane Manning James

[Jane Manning James]

Jane Manning James was the daughter of a freed slave and a convert to the restored Church. She knew Joseph Smith well in Nauvoo. She was one of the first pioneers to settle Utah and was mother to a large Utah family, remaining a faithful Latter-day Saint until her death in 1908 at the age of 87. While she faced many obstacles because she was a woman, an African American, and a Mormon, her faith sustained her in meeting her challenges.
