    Trials of the Trail

Hezekiah Mitchell had mixed feelings about the lands west of Grand River on the Mormon Trail in 1854. In his journal, he noted that there was “good feed for the cattle” but “many mosquitos and flies to torment the cattle and ourselves.” He tried to take advantage of the one and endure the other. “We fed the cattle well,” he wrote, “[and] rejoiced we were going to Zion.”
