    Bring Them Flowers

In 1906, President Joseph F. Smith spoke to the Salt Lake 17th Ward Relief Society at their annual founding meeting. He spoke on the subject of flowers and funerals and “said it was better to give . . . the living a single smile or one kind word than to bank up their coffin with flowers which would do no good to anyone. They are only emblematic of the one that is dead [and] soon decaying. Bring them flowers when they are living. Where there are poor, give the money you would expend in flowers to assist them in burying their dead.”
