Why Was Joseph Smith Looking for a Church?

Joseph Smith’s 1838 history, published in the Pearl of Great Price, makes clear that he was looking for a church to join before he had the First Vision. But what motivated that search? A history that Joseph wrote in 1832 mentions that he was concerned not only about his own spiritual welfare, but he also mourned over “the sins of the world.” Even while very young, he’d seen plenty of the suffering people cause one another, and he longed for something better.
