A Nauvoo Christmas Carol

The compilers of the History of the Church recounted how Joseph Smith started his Christmas morning in 1843. Lettice Rushton, an elderly British sister, came with a chorus of relatives and neighbors to his home at 1:00 a.m. to sing “Mortals, Awake! With Angels Join,” a hymn by Samuel Medley. As the writers recalled, Joseph rose and blessed the carolers in the name of the Lord.
