From Tragedy to Tunbridge

When Lucy Mack was 16, she became the primary caregiver for her sister Lovina, who was suffering from tuberculosis. Lovina died three years later, leaving Lucy feeling so “pensive and melancholy” that she often felt that “life was not worth possessing.” Worried by her grief, her brother Stephen insisted on taking her with him on a trip to Tunbridge, Vermont—where she met her future husband, Joseph Smith.
