The Value of Christmas

At its best, Christmas is not only a celebration of Christ’s birth on earth long ago, but it is also an opportunity to come closer to His vision for the world today. As the writer of an editorial in the Millennial Star just before Christmas of 1900 observed, “It may be that this general holiday helps to keep alive the fire of human brotherhood which shall one day break into a perfect flame, one that will recognize the fact that He is our elder brother, and that we are all brethren.” Christmas traditions of giving to the poor can also remind us to reach toward Christ’s vision, the editorial said. “The doctrines He enunciated laid the axe at the roots of inequality.”
