The Woodlot on the West End

In 1907, the Church bought the Smiths’ old Palmyra farm from William Avery Chapman. Chapman said his father was a boyhood friend of Joseph Smith and “had never touched an ax to the trees in the woodlot on the west end because Joseph had identified this area as the place where he had beheld his vision.” A few living trees in the grove today date back to the early 1800s.
