    A Pioneer Day Speaker

In 1890s Utah and Idaho, a popular Pioneer Day speaker was Green Flake, a black member of Brigham Young’s 1847 vanguard company. His personal presence was as impressive as his historical contribution. “His voice might do for a trumpet,” wrote the Salt Lake Tribune at the 1897 Jubilee celebration, “and he steps off like a West Pointer when he walks.”
