約翰·惠特茂於1802年在賓夕法尼亞州出生，之後他的家庭搬到紐約州，最後「和其他德國家庭一起定居在菲也特」，一個位在拋邁拉東南方約三十英里、人口稀疏的小鎮。1因為約翰·惠特茂的家庭和奧利佛·考德里有所往來，他得知了約瑟·斯密之事以及他正在翻譯一部古代經文紀錄——摩爾門經。2

惠特茂家庭對約瑟的工作很感興趣，1829年6月，約翰的弟弟大衛，到賓夕法尼亞州的哈茂耐拜訪年輕的先知，並提供惠特茂家做為免費居住之地。大衛也推薦他的一個兄弟，約翰，擔任抄寫員來提供協助。約瑟接受了他的提議，住在惠特茂家「直到翻譯結束」。也如同他們答應的，「剩下的事工中」，約翰「在書寫方面提供非常多的協助」。3

約瑟抵達菲也特不久，26歲的約翰·惠特茂就在賽尼卡湖接受洗禮。他成為看見摩爾門經頁片的八位證人之一，之後宣告：「我觸摸過那些頁片，兩面都有細緻的鐫文。」4

1830年4月6日，當教會在惠特茂家中成立時，主指示約瑟·斯密：「在你們中間要保存紀錄」5（見教約21：1）。為服從這項誡命，奧利佛·考德里被指派為第一位教會史記員。6

在這些歷史紀錄中，約瑟獲得的啟示佔很大的一部分。教會成立初期，約翰·惠特茂寫到：「主豐盛地祝福祂的門徒，祂不斷給予啟示，包含了教義、指示和預言。」71830年7月，先知「開始編排和抄寫他至此所接受到的所有啟示」，惠特茂則擔任他的抄寫員。8

惠特茂擔任史記員暨記錄員

1830年秋天，奧利佛·考德里前往拉曼人之中進行傳道工作，約翰·惠特茂「受到長老們的指派」接替他的工作，「要保存教會紀錄」，惠特茂寫到：「小約瑟·斯密告訴我，你也必須保存教會歷史。」9

對於抄寫約瑟·斯密的啟示，惠特茂感覺自己很適任，但對於史記員這個陌生的工作，他則有些猶豫。他告訴約瑟：「我不想做」，但若是主的指示，他仍同意接受這項指派，「我希望祂透過先見約瑟來顯示這件事。」10

隨後在1831年3月8日的啟示中，主重申了惠特茂的兩項指派，現今收錄在教義和聖約第47篇，要「書寫並記錄正式歷史，並協助我的僕人約瑟，抄寫一切將給他的事」11（見教約47：1）。惠特茂對於自己的寫作技巧有所顧慮，主以以下的應許來回應：「保惠師必提示你如何寫這些事」12（見教約47：4）。三個月之後，惠特茂開始記寫他的歷史「惠特茂之書」。13

幾個月後，教會領袖開始出版約瑟·斯密的啟示、一本聖詩集、教會報紙及其他文件。141831年11月的啟示中（教義和聖約第69篇），奧利佛·考德里和約翰·惠特茂被指派帶著啟示的手稿到密蘇里州獨立城，威廉·斐普在那裏設立了印刷機，讓手稿得以出版。15該啟示後來指示各地的傳教士「要把他們的報告送往錫安地」，並加增了惠特茂擔任教會史記員的工作，告訴他「要作多次旅行，從一地到一地，從一分會到一分會，好使他更容易得到知識——傳道和講解、書寫、抄錄、選擇，以及獲得一切有益於教會的事物，並為了將在錫安地成長的新生的世代而獲得一切事物」16（見教約69：5–8）。

1832年7月，約瑟·斯密鼓勵惠特茂要「記得保存教會的歷史和聚集這條誡命。」17同年晚些時候，先知接受到另一項啟示，擴大了約翰·惠特茂在歷史紀錄方面的職責：「這是主已指定的文書的職責，是記錄歷史和教會的總紀錄，記錄一切在錫安發生的事……還有他們的生活方式，他們的信心和行為；還有那些叛教者」18（見教約85：1–2）。

惠特茂在1838年結束教會成員身分之前，一直為這個成立不久的教會保存紀錄。一個歷史學者團隊指出，約翰·惠特茂寫下的歷史「指出了早期教會的很多重要問題，包括財產問題、教會紀律、新耶路撒冷、異議分子的處置、聖職領袖等級制度的建立。……惠特茂的事工中最特別的是，他的歷史中包含很多啟示、請願書和信件。」19

約翰·惠特茂及其歷史紀錄的後續發展

1834年，約瑟·斯密為密蘇里州的教會指派會長團，大衛·惠特茂為會長，約翰·惠特茂及威廉·斐普為其諮理。約翰·惠特茂和斐普後來被指控在該職位上有財務方面的不當行為，隨後在1838年3月被教會開除教籍。

惠特茂在他的歷史中寫到：

「一些屬世的行為，並沒有受到各方的認同，最後也以開除諸多教會成員做為結束，威廉·斐普和我也在其中。

因此，我結束後期聖徒教會的歷史紀錄，即便我現況如此，我希望我的過錯能被寬恕，我的罪能在末日被塗抹，在神國中得救。」20

約瑟·斯密在他們開除教籍的幾天後抵達遠西城，新指派的文書拜訪惠特茂，以便取得他的歷史紀錄，但惠特茂拒絕交出文件。21在1838-1839年間，摩爾門教會的艱困期間，他短暫地離開遠西城，但一段時間後又回到該處度過餘生。22
