Leaders of the Church

Research Guide

Welcome to the research guide about the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This guide is provided by the Church History Library and is intended to identify some resources that will help you learn more about the leadership history of the Church.

Some helpful definitions are provided below:

General Authorities consist of the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Presidency of the Seventy, the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy, and the Presiding Bishopric. They oversee the operation of the Church in general.

General auxiliaries consist of the general presidencies of the Primary, Relief Society, Sunday School, Young Men, and Young Women organizations. These presidencies oversee the operations of the various organizations within the Church.

This is the official web page about the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It contains links to brief biographies and photographs of each member of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, “First Presidency”

This entry discusses the development and responsibilities of the First Presidency. The Encyclopedia of Mormonism is a good general reference for information about the Church and its history, beliefs, doctrine, and procedures. It is not published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but most of the sources used for writing its volumes are. The online version is hosted by Brigham Young University.

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, “President of the Church”

This entry in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism identifies the Presidents of the Church until 1991 and discusses the calling of each Church President and the need for a prophet to preside over the Church.

Presidents of the Church Student Manual

This institute manual discusses the different Presidents of the Church. It not only contains stories of the various Presidents of the Church but also explains why the Church is organized in the manner that it is.

Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia

This is an online version of Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia: A Compilation of Biographical Sketches of Prominent Men and Women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Andrew Jenson, who was the assistant Church historian from 1897 to 1941. The online version is hosted by Brigham Young University.

Mighty Men of Zion: General Authorities of the Last Dispensation

This book provides a biographical sketch of all the General Authorities of the Church since its latter-day beginnings. It is organized by office, including the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Patriarch to the Church, Assistant to the Twelve, First Council of the Seventy, and Presiding Bishopric.

At Home with the Prophets: Family Life Series

This is a collection of books about the prophets from Joseph Smith to Spencer W. Kimball. There is a book dedicated to each of these prophets, providing a list of important events of the fulness of times, pedigree charts for that prophet, and the accompanying family group sheets.

Messages of the First Presidency

These six volumes provide the official statements of the First Presidency from 1833 to 1964.

This entry contains three relevant articles: “Seventy: Overview,” “Seventy: First Council of the Seventy,” and “Seventy: Quorums of Seventy.” The first article describes the office of Seventy and discusses its establishment in the 1830s and its subsequent development. The second article discusses the General Authority office of Seventy before 1975, when its functions and officers were incorporated into the current quorums of the Seventy. The third article describes the organization and duties of members of the Seventy in the Church today. The Encyclopedia of Mormonism is a good general reference for information about the Church and its history, beliefs, doctrine, and procedures. This is a several-volume reference about members of the seventies quorums who were called or ordained between 1835 and 1850.

Seventies’ Autobiographies

This is a compilation of autobiographies written by early (Nauvoo-era) members of the seventies quorums.

This is the official web page about the Presiding Bishopric of the Church. It provides a brief description of the organization of the Bishopric and links to biographies of the current Bishopric members.

Selections from the Deseret News Church Almanac   

The Church Almanac has been written every year since 1974, and it discusses several different topics. It is a good source for those researching information on temples, local units, the Church internationally, and leaders of the Church.

The official records for the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organizations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be found with call numbers CR 11, CR 13, and CR 16 respectively.
