Mary crossed the Atlantic with her father and two brothers aboard the ship Thornton in 1856. Her father and brother (both named James) crossed the plains in the John A. Hunt company, one of the wagon companies that accompanied the Martin and Willie handcarts. The father died en route. Mary married Jeremiah Bingham on 27 April 1857 indicating that she also crossed the plains in 1856. Additional research is needed to discover if she traveled with the wagons or the handcarts.
