He initially came to Utah with the Mormon Battalion sick detachment in 1847. He returned to Winter Quarters that same fall. He joined with his family when they came to Utah in 1850. The birth of a daughter, Zerviah, on the plains is evidence for Abel Lamb's family traveling overland to Utah in 1850. Abel's obituary states he reached Salt Lake City on September 10. Several companies came into Salt Lake City near that date including the Aaron Johnson company, Benjamin Hawkins company, and Williams-Blair freight train. A secondary source notes he was in the Johnson company, but that can't be confirmed.
