Judging and Awards

Criteria for judging artwork

Judging Criteria

Entries were judged on the successful expression of Latter-day Saint subject matter and relevance to the competition theme; on the excellence of aesthetic and technical accomplishment; and on the creativity, originality, and quality of the art.

Jurors paid special attention to the following three elements:

  • The subject matter or narrative used to express a religious theme
  • The effective application of formal qualities (such as composition, color, and texture), styles, and techniques
  • The use of symbol or metaphor in conveying a complex concept or idea

Judging Process

Art was selected for exhibition through two rounds of judging by a multimember jury. The first round was based on photographic images of the artwork submitted with an entry form. First-round winners sent the original artwork to the Church History Museum for the second round of judging.

For the second round of judging, the jury consisted of members of a youth council working alongside professional museum staff. These young jurors were trained in art assessment and jury ethics by professional art curators and educators. Winning second-round entries are now on exhibit.
